Dental license renewal requirements by state: CE hours and cycles for 2026

How often dentists, hygienists and assistants renew, how many CE hours they need, and which courses are mandatory, with four states as examples.

Four states compared

California
Every 2 years, by the end of your birth month. 50 units, including 2 in infection control, 2 in the Dental Practice Act, 2 on Schedule II opioids, and hands-on BLS.
New York
Every 3 years. 60 hours, plus a state infection control and barrier precautions course every 4 years.
Ohio
Every 2 years. 40 hours, including infection control, ethics and jurisprudence, and opioid prescribing for DEA registrants.
Pennsylvania
Every 2 years, March 31 of odd years. 30 hours, including 2 on child abuse recognition and 2 on opioid prescribing for DEA registrants.

Hygienists and assistants

Auxiliary requirements are usually lower but just as strict. In California, hygienists and assistants need 25 hours every two years, including infection control and the Dental Practice Act.

What to track for each person

  • License number, board and expiry date.
  • CE hours required, and hours completed so far.
  • Each mandatory course, tracked separately from the total.
  • A current BLS card, because many boards require it to renew.
  • Certificates, since boards audit a sample of renewals.
