EPA amalgam separator rule: what records a dental office must keep

The equipment, the one-time report and the three years of paperwork that inspectors ask for.

Records to keep

  • Date of each separator inspection and who did it.
  • Dates the retaining container was replaced.
  • Dates amalgam waste was shipped, and the licensed facility that received it.
  • Any repair or replacement of the separator.

Who is exempt

Offices that practice only oral pathology, oral and maxillofacial radiology or surgery, orthodontics, periodontics or prosthodontics are generally exempt. Check with your local control authority, which may have its own form.
