What is an evergreen contract, and how do you get out of one?

Evergreen clauses renew indefinitely until someone acts. Here is how to spot one and exit cleanly.

How to spot one

Look for phrases like “shall automatically renew for successive terms” or “shall continue in effect until terminated by either party.”

Getting out

  • Find the notice period and how notice must be delivered.
  • Calculate the deadline for the current term.
  • Send notice and get confirmation of receipt.
  • Record the end date so final invoices can be checked.
